Yoga Retreats

Organising a retreat is bit like planning a wedding without the hassle of ending up with a husband. You need to hunt for the perfect yoga retreat venue, the best chef for healthy meals, the most delicious food, plan the yoga classes and activities, and find unique gifts for the goodie bags… The to-do list stretches like the horizon.

Yet, above all else, it's about creating an experience where each participant has the time of their lives. It's a delicate dance, not too much, not too little, balancing the profound with the playful. It's about sculpting an environment where every person finds their perfect rhythm of growth and relaxation.

Yoga Retreats in History: From Ancient Philosophers to Modern Wellness

Retreats can be seen across history from the philosophical gatherings of ancient Greek thinkers like Plato and Aristotle to the solitary contemplations of the Buddha in secluded settings. Early Christian monasticism introduced the practice of retreating to hermitages and monastic communities for spiritual growth, while the Egyptian desert hosted the ascetic pursuits of the Desert Fathers and Mothers. Medieval pilgrimages merged travel and spiritual reflection, laying the groundwork for indigenous practices like Native American vision quests.

The Enlightenment era saw European thinkers convening in intellectual retreats to exchange ideas. The Transcendentalist movement celebrated retreats in nature for connecting with inner truths, paving the way for yoga retreats in the 20th century.

The Modern Yoga Retreat: Balancing Contemplation and Indulgence

A ‘yoga retreat’ can mean many things. On one hand it might be an exotic holiday in a 5 star hotel with a yoga class thrown in, or at the other end of the spectrum, it might mean early mornings in deep contemplation, hours spent in silent meditation, and activities as scrubbing floors with toothbrushes to delve into yogic principles. Both have their own appeal and value. What I find interesting is the space that lies in between. A space that bridges the gap between intense contemplation and carefree indulgence, nurturing personal inquiry whilst savouring the fun and joy of a well-deserved holiday.

In general today’s retreats tend to be wellness-focused, mindfulness escapes, still continuing the timeless pursuit of self-discovery, renewal, and enlightenment.

Unique and Unusual Yoga Retreats

Darkness Retreats: complete darkness for days or weeks to enhance sensory perception and deepen meditation.

Vipassana Intensives: 10-day silent meditation retreats with rigorous schedules, multiple hours of meditation, and strict adherence to ethical guidelines.

Underwater Meditation: Combining scuba diving with meditation to explore the depths of the ocean, finding tranquillity beneath the waves.

Underwater yoga: retreats take participants beneath the waves, where they perform asanas while wearing specialized scuba gear.

Volcano Meditation: Meditate near active volcanoes to harness the energy and ‘ignite’ inner transformation.

Survival Retreats: that teach survival skills, from building shelters to finding food in the wild.

Ice and Snow Retreats: in icy landscapes, combining activities like ice baths and snow meditation.

Extreme Silence Retreats: Step into prolonged periods of silence, transcending speech for personal reflection, inner exploration, and heightened awareness.

Yoga in the Clouds: The world's highest yoga retreat was held on Mount Everest at an altitude of 17,600 feet.

Firewalking Retreats: Retreats centred around firewalking to overcome fear and step outside their comfort zones by walking barefoot over hot coals.

Curious about my upcoming yoga retreat? Here’s what one of my previous guests had to say:

“The retreat was outstanding in terms of accommodation quality, food and workshops. It really is very hard to find a single fault. I had the perfect balance of quality ‘me’ time and yoga sessions. The food was so delicious, the flavours were fantastic.”
